Why Exercise Intensity Matters

The Three Main Intensity Metrics

Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)

RPE is a self-reported scale — usually 1 to 10 — where you rate how hard exercise feels in the moment. A score of 1 is barely moving; a 10 is maximum, all-out effort. Most structured workouts target a range of 5–7 for moderate sessions, with intervals pushing to 8–9.

RPE's strength is its simplicity. No device needed — just honest self-assessment. Its weakness is that it's subjective: stress, sleep, and hydration all shift how hard the same pace feels on different days. Research supports the Talk Test as a reasonably accurate proxy for the ventilatory threshold — the point where breathing shifts from comfortable to labored. Not every workout should be conversation-free; low-intensity movement has a distinct and important role in any well-rounded routine.

Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)

Maximum Heart Rate (MHR)

Which Method Should You Use?

The honest answer: any of them works — and combining two gives you a fuller picture. A useful starting approach is to use the Talk Test or RPE to calibrate a session in real time, then use heart rate data afterward to spot patterns over weeks and months.

Heart Rate Monitors: A Useful Tool, Not a Rule

Wearable heart rate monitors can vary in accuracy, particularly during high-intensity or non-steady-state exercise. Optical wrist-based sensors tend to be less precise than chest strap monitors. Use heart rate data as a trend indicator over time rather than treating every single reading as exact. When in doubt, layer in RPE or the Talk Test as a cross-check.
